When you want to take part in a volunteer project abroad, one of the most important steps is to choose the project in which you want to engage. Asking yourself the right questions before committing is the key to the success of your project.
Project type before project location
Before anything else, we strongly advise you to focus more on the project type than on the destination. Do not confuse alternative tourism with volunteering. These are two very different activities and you might come back disappointed with this experience.
The success of your volunteering depends much more on your involvement in the project than on the landscape around you.
An example ? Let’s imagine you are passionate about sea turtle protection but that your first idea was to go on a volunteer project in Thailand. In that case, it won’t be possible to combine both project location and project type. However, you will find similar projects in Mexico or Costa Rica in the search engine. These might interest you more, even though you didn’t consider these countries at first.
Of course, other elements have an influence on the project you choose, like the duration of your stay (short-term or long-term) or your budget. According to all these elements, feel free to spend time on our search engine in order to spot projects that might spark your interest.
