Croatia

Croatia is a very old European settlement region, where the greatest civilizations of the Mediterranean have followed one another. Since the 11th century, the country has been struggling to maintain its independence. In 2000, Croatia opened up to Europe and in 2013 it became a member of the EU.

Due to its particular shape, the country has many borders and the relief and climate are very diverse. The Croatian coast is quite chopped, so that Croatia has 698 islands, 389 islets and 78 reefs (47 islands are inhabited). The fact that Croatia has been pulled between different countries gives it the particularity of being at the crossroads of four large cultural spaces, which confers richness to its heritage, both architectural and artistic.

Croatia has many beautiful landscapes to offer, each one as beautiful as the next. For instance,s the Plitvice lakes, Pula, etc… It became independent in 1991 following the break-up of Yugoslavia.

Six World Heritage sites and eight national parks testify to Croatia’s immense cultural and natural interest. The country owes its cultural richness to its history, which sometimes was quite turbulent: it was first part of the Roman Empire before becoming a border region separating the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires.

Croatian cuisine includes dishes such as grilled meat, Dalmatian smoked ham, salted sardines, sheep’s cheese and paprika salami. Croatia produces many fine wines.
